Second DISSECT training school in Poznań

The three-day “Innovative tools to improve cancer surgery training” event took place from 27 to 29 May 2026 in a hybrid format, linking on-site delegates in Poznań with clinical specialists elsewhere.

Day 1 — AI infrastructure

At the Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center (PCSS), sessions examined real-world AI deployments in clinical workflows, including image analysis, medical-document synthesis, text-processing tools and multimodal healthcare models.

A technical tour covered high-performance computing and quantum server architecture; optical technology, Network Operations Centre, Internet of Things and smart-environment laboratories; and the medVC platform.

Briefings addressed data integrity, cybersecurity, large language models and safe work in protected clinical sandbox environments.

Day 2 — clinical implementation and imaging

At the Greater Poland Cancer Centre, Professor Julian Malicki welcomed participants before presentations on technology and surgery. Dr Karol Polom discussed the development of artificial intelligence in medicine, while Dr Andrew Gumbs addressed European safety guidance for autonomous and assistive AI in live surgery.

Gastric and colorectal sessions covered robotic surgery, augmented and virtual reality, telementoring, gastric cancer resection and fluorescence perfusion mapping. Further sessions considered virtual reality, augmented reality and computer vision in active medical education, including breast cancer surgery with real-time overlays.

Dr Pedro Gouveia presented the BreastXR AI modality for locating breast tumours in three dimensions. Dr Maciej Bobowicz presented the Cinderella trial and an AI-supported platform intended to help patients visualise potential aesthetic outcomes before breast-conserving surgery or immediate reconstruction.

Day 3 — no-code clinical AI hackathon

Maria Batrakova led a four-hour workshop in which multidisciplinary teams formulated clinical questions using the PICO method. Participants used research tools including Consensus and Elicit to examine literature and NotebookLM to produce evidence syntheses and identify gaps or contradictions.

Teams developed clinical recommendations and delivered three-minute pitches, followed by discussion of where AI may save planning time and where expert human oversight remains essential.
